Name of creator

(1974 - 1984)

Administrative history

The position of Vice-Rector, Administration and Finance was established on August 10, 1973, with the adoption by the Board of Governors of By-Law “D” which established the governing and administrative structure of the coming new university, Concordia University. The new university received its official establishment from the Quebec only a year later, in August 1974. The office was partly in continuity with the former Office of the Vice-Principal, Administration and Finance at Sir George Williams University (SGWU). The Concordia Vice-Rector, Administration and Finance was responsible to the Rector for the general administration of the University and was a member of the Board of Governors. In October 1984 the position of the Vice-Rector, Administration and Finance was divided in two new ones, Vice-rector Services and Vice-Rector, Institutional and Finance, creating two new offices.

Name of creator

(1967 - 1974)

Administrative history

The position of Vice-Principal, Administration and Finance was established at the end of 1966. John Smola was appointed to the position, effective in February 1967.

Custodial history

Some files in the fonds predate the establishment of Concordia University in 1974 which are the records of the Office of the Vice-Principal, Administration and Finance of Sir George Williams University. These records were created by John Smola Vice-Principal, Administration and Finance at SGWU and first Vice-Rector, Administration and Finance at Concordia, from 1974 to 1976.

Scope and content

The fonds documents the activities of the Office of the Vice-Rector at Concordia for the period of 1974 to 1984 and some file document the activities of the Office of the Vice-Principal, Administration and Finance at Sir George Williams University. The latter files include some documents relating to the SGWU Computer Centre incident of 1969. The fonds also includes some files of André-Jean Laprade, Assistant Vice-Rector Relations and Audit. Those files mainly relate to "Groupe de recherche et d’élaboration d’un système d’informatique de gestion universitaire (GRESIGU)," 1968-1975 (A. J. Laprade being the responsible for the « SIGU-Recherche » group). There are also some Stirling Dorrance’s files who was first at Loyola College and then at Concordia, Assistant to the Rector, Development (these files were probably mixed up in storage space at some points - by error - with the files from the Vice-Rector, Administration and Finance).

The fonds manily consists of reports, correspondence, and some photographs.
