      Dr. Norma Baumel Joseph is the Director of the Women and Religion specialization. She is also an associate of the Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies. She received her B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1966 and M.A. from the City University of New York in 1968 and her Ph.D. from Concordia University in 1995. She first started teaching at Concordia in 1975 as a Part-Time Lecturer and obtained her Tenure-Track position in 1998 in the Department of Religion. She is the founder of the Women and Religion specialization.

      Norma Joseph is an Orthodox Jew and an active feminist. In 1996, she and her colleagues organized the first all-Canadian Jewish Studies Conference. In 2012, she was the co-director of the Azrieli Institute Academic Faculty (she would later be part of its Advisors Group).

      • In 1989, she worked on the documentary Half the Kingdom on Jewish women and Judaism.
      • She is an activist who raised awareness for the thousands of women with problems getting religious divorces in the Orthodox and Conservative Jewish traditions. In 1990, she successfully worked with the Canadian government to protect Jewish women in need of a get (divorce).
      • In 1996, her article “Jewish Education for Women: Rabbi Moshe Feinstein's Map of America”, published in American Jewish History, won the Leo Wasserman Prize for best article.
      • In 1998, National Council of Jewish Women (Montreal chapter) chose Norma Jospeh as its Woman of Distinction.
      • In 2000, the Montreal Jewish community presented Norma Joseph with the Jacob Zipper Education Award.
      • Since 2002, she writes a column on Jewish life for the Canadian Jewish News.
      • In 2002, which she received the Leading Light, Woman of the Year Award from the Jewish Women International.
      • She is a founding member of the Canadian Coalition of Jewish Women for the Get.
      • In 2019, she received the Louis Rosenberg Canadian Jewish Studies Distinguished Service Award.
