Research conducted or supported by the Black Studies Centre

The subseries provides an overview of the research conducted or supported by the Black Studies Center, predominantly in the 1970s. It provides information on various subjects, including international student enrolment, African arts and crafts, Black identity, Black history, the Montreal music scene, visible minorities in Montreal schools, and research about several countries.

The series contains, among other documents, questionnaires, notes, research papers, studies, correspondence, statistics, address lists, reports, biographical sketches, and meeting minutes.

Research papers collected by the Black Studies Centre

In includes a reproduction of a thesis published in 1928 about the Montreal Black community.

BCS Library collection

The subseries documents the Black Studies Centre’s endeavors to make information about Black history, culture, and contributions available to the community through a vast collection of books and other textual material, slides, audio recordings and films. This documentation is represented not only through the original card catalog, lists and bibliographies, but also through a wide array of publications collected by the Center that are available as part of the fonds. In addition, the series contains documents pertaining to the organization of the Black Studies Centre library and the work of its employees.
The subseries contains, among other documents, bibliographies, reviews, notes, poems, essays, speeches, lists, leaflets, brochures, newsletters, pamphlets, booklets, studies, accession records, photographs, thesis, reports, periodicals, magazine and newspaper articles, correspondence, subscriptions, a poster, and a map.

The subseries provides information on various subjects related to Black history, culture, contributions, and experiences. It also includes documents pertaining to activism, racism, and other topics. The geographic coverage of materials in this series extends across Canada and the United States. The series also includes documents concerning significant events. Several folders in this series document the Sir George Williams Affair, also sometimes referred to as the Sir George Williams Computer Centre Incident, the Anderson Affair, and the Sir George Williams University Computer Riot. The subseries also covers significant political and cultural events, occurring both in Canada and across the world.

YWCA, other organizations

The materials in the sub-series document the Montreal YMCA's relationships with organizations such as the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and the Montreal Council of Social Agencies. The first joint YM-YWCA was opened in Windsor, Ontario in 1926. The sub-series also documents relations with the Student Christian Movement (which grew out of the YMCA's university branches in the 1920s), the Montreal Young Men's Hebrew Association, and other organizations.

YMCAs of the United States

The sub-series consists of materials generated by local YMCAs in the United States as well as the American National Council of YMCAs and its precursors. The sub-series documents American YMCA activity at the national, international, and local levels.

YMCAs of the United Kingdom

The sub-series consists of materials generated by YMCA bodies in the United Kingdom that were kept by Montreal YMCA staff members or held in the library of the Montreal YMCA.

Regional YMCA councils, committees

The sub-series documents the activities of various regional and territorial councils and committees, including territorial committees and other groups within the National Council and other groups of local YMCAs.

Day camp

Records in the sub-series document the organization, administration, promotion, and programs of Montreal YMCA day camps.
