The Artist Sur Rodney (Sur) and fellow artists

The series illustrates the North-American and more precisely the New York East Village art scene around Sur Rodney (Sur) from the 1960s to 2018. It depicts Sur Rodney (Sur)’s career as an artist, his involvement in the art scene and his relation to fellow artists. It gives an insight in the life of various artists by the means of personal correspondence exchanged with Sur Rodney (Sur), exhibition catalogues, and documents related to The Sur Rodney (Sur) Show (1980) and the All New Sur Rodney (Sur) Show (1981), which were both presenting artists from the Manhattan's Lower East Side art scene. Artists mentioned in the series are, among others, Andreas Senser, Gracie Mansion, Geoffrey Hendricks, Pauline Graham Leathem, Ronald Heydon, Nan Goldin, John Brill and Lorraine O'Grady. The series covers subjects like Black Contemporary Art, Performance art, and Queer Art. It also refers to Visual Aids, an organization working on AIDS awareness through art projects, while supporting artists living with AIDS and archiving their work.

Personal papers

Series contains personal documents concerning the life, work, and interests of Leon Llewellyn. This series also contains documentation pertaining to Eric Llewellyn's publication, "A Journey Into Our Caribbean Past."


The series mainly consists of internal announcements, 2001-2008; press conference files on academic, social and cultural events at Concordia, 2003-2009; and information files on various university units and programs, 1988-2006. Some files of this series were initiated by Public Relations Department before 2002.

The Adams family and Sur Rodney (Sur)’s personal life

The series documents Sur Rodney (Sur)’s childhood in Montreal and his family background, illustrating the life of a black family in Montreal in the second half of the 20th century. Most of the documents have been collected by Jean [Gertrude Peters] Gordon.
The series contains correspondence between Sur Rodney (Sur) and his parents, Desmond Adams and Jean Adams, and documents related to family members, namely Desmond Rupert Adams, Sur Rodney (Sur)’s grandmother Hazel Irene Pierce, and Rodney’s brother David Adams. Several photo albums illustrate Sur Rodney’s childhood and his larger family. This series also contains documents related to the Negro Community Centre (NCC) and Union United Church, which both were frequented by family members, as well as Expo 67 and the Watchtower Society. Furthermore, the series informs about Sur Rodney (Sur)’s name change and his marriage to Geoffrey Hendricks.

The series includes, but is not limited to, correspondence, photographs, leaflets, programs, flyers, forms, diploma, passports and other pieces of identification, artwork, postcards, brochures, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook and an autograph book.

Textual records

Series contains textual records relating to Black History in Montreal; the Negro Community Centre; Union United Church; the Coloured Women’s Club; The Red Feather and the Welfare Federation; Railway Porters; the Elks; the documentary film Show Girls; and Jazz in Montreal.

Departmental Management

The series consists of some management files of the Public Affairs and Government Relations department, mainly for the period 2002-2006. It includes reports, correspondence, and minutes. The series also consists of some digital records of moving images on Convocation ceremonies, 2012-2017.

Series documents the historical and organizational development of the Black Theatre Workshop (BTW), from its beginnings in 1965 as the Trinidad & Tobago Association (TTA) Drama group, through its incorporation as the BTW in 1972, to today. This series contains materials concerning the work of the Board of Directors and related committees. It also documents the planning and the management of human resources at the BTW.

Newspaper clippings and magazines

The series provides information on jazz-related events in Canada and on jazz musicians, including, but not limited to, Norman Marshall Villeneuve, Oliver Jones, Art Blakey, Dougie Richardson and Big Miller.

The series contains newspaper clippings, magazines, programs and flyers. It includes two issues of Toronto Jazz.


This series consists mostly of posters created by Louise Artibello-Villeneuve advertising concerts of Norman Marshall Villeneuve’s Jazz band, but also includes posters of other concerts in which Norman Marshall Villeneuve participated.

Series contains photographs and textual records documenting the Negro Community Centre (NCC). Photographs depict the interior and exterior of the NCC building at 2035 Coursol Street; programs and activities occurring at the NCC, including dance and music lessons, arts and crafts, wood working, sports, summer camps, and games; and NCC staff and members. Photographs also show the daycare and concern the Stanley Clyke Memorial Library. Textual records document the administration of the NCC and include information about activities, programs, and services. Documents pertaining to Annual General Meetings (1980; 1994; 1996; 1998) at the NCC include meeting minutes and agendas, financial statements (1997-1998), and annual reports (1995-1996). Other documents include a membership card (1974); correspondence (1982; 1987); an issue of Focus Umoja (1974); lists of Board members (1994) and nominations to the Board of Directors (1998-2000); proposed changes to NCC by-laws (1998); financial reports (1994-1995; 1995-1996); minutes from a meeting of the Little Burgundy Council (1973); a newsletter (1994); a list of acquisitions for the Stanley Clyke Memorial Library (1978); a report to the building committee (1988); an insurance claim regarding water damage (1994); biographical information related to Stanley Clyke and Emily Clyke; and newspaper clippings (1967; 1975; 2000; 2014). A newspaper concerning the boating tragedy also forms part of the series (1954).

Series is composed predominantly of newspapers and magazines that document the interests, concerns, and activities of Montreal's English-speaking Black community. It contains issues of Uhuru; Focus Umoja; Focus Magazine; Afro-Can; Afro Canadian; Contrast; The Black Voice; Montréal Camera; Community Contact; The Montreal Challenger; The Montreal Oracle; African Awakener; Canadian Tribune; Voice of Montreal; and The Black: A Canadian Journal of Self Expression, among others. This series also contains drawings by Leon Llewellyn, both originals and copies, that appeared in these publications, as well as photographs, and objects.

Financial records

The series provides an overview of La Centrale’s financial situation from the 1973 to the present. It provides information on funding sources, budget management, and taxes. It includes information on different funding programs, mostly from government agencies

The series provides information on the exhibition and event programming at the gallery including the selection process.

The series contains exhibition proposals by various artists, including visual material and CVs, as well as selection files and meeting minutes of the Programming committee, including special committees like the Committee of the 25th anniversary. The series also contains the annual programming leaflets.


The series provides information on the establishment and evolution of La Centrale from its beginnings in 1973 to the present, including its administrative structure, its objectives and mission, as well as general planning. It also contains information about the Société du 5 avril, of which La Centrale was a member.

Research Material and Publications

The series is composed of correspondence, articles, and photocopies of various documents (mainly 1887-1904) mainly related to the 16 pioneering female journalists. The Alice Asselin file contains a few original documents (textual and photos). The series also includes documentation specifically on the Canadian Women’s Press Club and various publications.

Artists and events

The series provides information on a wide variety of Quebec, Canadian and international women artists. Most of these artists exhibited at La Centrale or participated in events organized by the gallery. The documentation often goes beyond the events and exhibitions organized by La Centrale and also provides information about the professional development of the artists. The series also includes information related to the preparation of events at La Centrale.

The series contains, but is not limited to, correspondence, brochures, résumés, exhibition contracts, artist’s statements, photographs, newspaper articles, publications, posters, invitation cards, sound recordings, moving images, guest books, and a few objects.

Community organizations and events

Series is composed of documentation pertaining to numerous English-speaking Black community organizations based in Montreal. It also contains materials documenting Leon Llewellyn's participation in many of these community organizations. While the series contains materials dated from 1970 to 2012, including textual records, photographs, drawings, and objects, most document the period between 1970 and 1979. Materials primarily concern the activities of these organizations, including their administration, functions, and programs. Community organizations that appear throughout the documentation include, among others, the Negro Community Centre/Charles H. Este Cultural Centre; Black Studies Centre; Quebec Board of Black Educators; Black Community Central Administration of Quebec; Black Community Council of Quebec; National Black Coalition of Canada; Côte-des-Neiges Black Community Association; Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Black Community Association; Côte-des-Neiges Black Community Development Project; Black Theater Workshop; Association of Black Artists; Montreal Black Photography Society; Union United Church; Black Action Party; National Black Coalition Institute of Research in the Black Experience; National Congress of Black Women; Black Community Communications Media; Black Is!; Negro Theater Arts Club; Revue Theater; Black Workers Association; Black Youth Radio; and the Black Youth Television Workshop. Documents in this series also concern particular events occurring in the Montreal Black community, including the Second National Congress of Black Women; Afro-Festival; Carnival; Carifiesta; and Congress of Commonwealth Caribbean Immigrants, among many others. In addition, arts-related events, instruction, exhibitions, and programs are well documented throughout, including those which took place at the Black Studies Centre.


This series includes photographs of Norman Marshall Villeneuve as a drummer with different bands, as well as photographs of other jazz musicians.


The series provides information on the publications produced by La Centrale, including documentation on the publication process.

Series contains expenses and finances relating to René Balcer. Material consists of travel expenses for René Balcer and his wife Carolyn, invoices and receipts from various projects, and meetings with clients.

Human Resources

The series provides information on the management of personnel at La Centrale from 1983 to 2011. It informs about different administrative positions, recruitment, volunteering and internships as well as working conditions at the gallery.

The series contains a collective agreement, job descriptions, contracts, CVs, internship reports, guidelines, correspondence, and related documents.

Administrative documents

Series consists of administrative documents created by René Balcer. Material consists of a chronology of achievements, proposal for a television production company, notes to the archivist and user regarding the material in the fonds, a log of progress made on early scripts, headshots, the writer’s resume and architectural plans for the Balcer residence.

Contracts and legal documents

Series includes contracts and other legal documents related to René Balcer’s work. Material consists of contract agreements for Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Movies of the Week agreements, assorted television series agreements, arbitration documents, audit settlements, copyright agreements, deposition transcripts, and rights agreements.


Series contains correspondence to and from René Balcer. Material consists of legal correspondences and memos regarding contract negotiations and depositions, correspondence regarding scripts, correspondence with specific individuals, fan mail, emails, memos, letters, correspondence relating to the production of Law & Order, and correspondence with networks.
