Series consists of documents relating to the activities, goals and functions of the department. Series contains a historical review of the Academic Planning Committee, from 1963 to 1967, produced by Mr. Whitelaw at the beginning of his mandate as Curriculum Coordinator (Academic), the Academic Planning Office filing system [which was probably developed by Mr. Whitelaw] and a Space Need / Proposal for Sir George Williams University.
Material consists of photos, negatives, and slides of Irving Layton at public readings, Irving Layton with Rath and friends at restaurants in Toronto, photos of Layton’s home in Montreal, Layton at book launches, and with his son Max.
The series provides an overview of the Black Studies Center’s financial situation between 1966 to 2007. By the means of grant applications and reports, the series also provides information about various projects undertaken by the Black Studies Center.

Series contains one book on Black history in Canada and three poetry books published between 1966 and 1982. This is my Song (1982) and Going Black Home ([198-?]) by Peter Bailey were self-published by the author and inscribed to Ralph Whims. Leo Bertley’s Canada and its people of African Descent (1977) and Studies in Black and White (1966) by Dave Pinson can also be found in this series.
The series contains correspondence. Material consists of postcards from Irving Layton to Dora Pleet and a copy of a letter from Layton to Barbara Frum refuting a review of the biography "Irving Layton, a Portrait" by Elspeth Cameron.
Series contains promotional materials collected about Irving Layton, including invitations to events celebrating the life and work of the poet, the program for the dedication of Irving Layton Avenue in Montreal. It documents Vernon Isaac’s career as a jazz musician through recordings of the LVJ Trio, Vernon Isaac’s Big Band, Jazz Ottawa and an interview with Vernon Isaac. It also includes recordings of Allan Wellman and Oliver Jones.
