John Loye fonds

The fonds provides information on the Irish community of Montreal in the 19th and early 20th century, and its view of Ireland and Irish culture. Some documents relate to the United Irish Societies (U.I.S.) of Montreal and the Saint Patrick’s Society of Montreal, as well as to Thomas d’Arcy McGee and John Loye, whereas others are standing in connection to James McAran, a Montreal merchant. The fonds also gives information on the Irish Question and reactions to it in Canada, through an album of newspaper clippings collected by James Albert Whittaker during 1920 to 1923, augmented by correspondence and small brochures from the same time period.

The fonds consists of four albums and several separate documents. The albums contain collections of greeting cards, Irish songs and poetry, family photographs, and newspaper clippings on the Irish Question. Furthermore, the fonds includes without limitations newspapers, sheet music, brochures, correspondence, a map of Ireland, drawings (including original artwork for the United Irish Societies of Montreal logo), and the text of an address on Irish-Canadian history given at the St. Patrick's Society Ball in 1872 by John O'Farrell, president of the Hibernian Benevolent Society of Quebec.

The fonds also gives information on his involvement in numerous associations and cultural organizations as founder, director, and jury member. The fonds gives information on his teaching activities and the courses he gave at various colleges, as well as his speeches.

The fonds includes correspondence, textile samples, course notes, theatre programs, posters, invitations to openings and exhibits, photographs, clippings, drawings, albums, and a scrapbook of clippings of fashion photographs with swatches of the fabrics used in the garments shown. It includes a major collection of documents on the history of textiles and the artists and craftspersons who made them.

The fonds consists of ten series, many of them subdivided into sub-series. The documents cover the period 1972 to 1982, however, the great majority of the documents were created between 1973 and 1976.

This finding aid deals with the administrative, financial files of this organization as well as the artist and exhibition files, the publicity material (posters, art catalogues), and photographs.

There is little documentation for the activities of the Véhicule Art Inc. gallery from 1976 to 1982. During this time the gallery experienced both administrative and financial difficulties. Frequent changes of staff and insufficient funding contributed to the weakening of the gallery and its activities.

The original order of the documents quite faithfully reflected the internal organization of the gallery. Thus, the documents dating from 1972 to 1975, were relatively well organized and required no further arrangement; on the other hand, those covering the 1976-1982 period needed complete reorganization.

The Mary Morter fond contains documents pertaining to theater in Montreal. The Ann Charney fonds provides information on Ann Charney’s journalistic and literary career as well as her personal life. It documents both Charney's fiction and non-fiction writings from the 1960s until 2009, and provides insight into the process of publishing from the author’s point of view. The fonds also includes information on the Blue Metropolis foundation, a not-for-profit organization located in Montreal, Quebec, responsible for the annual Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival. Finally, the fonds provides a glimpse into the life of Jewish emigrants. It also contains information about Canadian and international artists working during the second half of the 20th century.

Between 1940 and 1986, Alex Robertson collected records. Most of the recordings in the fonds are 78 rpm's pressed in Montreal by Berliner and Compo: Berliner was the first Canadian company to produce records, and Compo was the first to record Canadian Black musicians. The fonds contains a large number of sound recordings that have never had commercial or widespread distribution. The fonds includes about 3,000 pieces of sheet music of various genres, dating from ca 1885 to 1970; about 1,000 pieces have Canadian content. The fonds includes numerous catalogues and promotional pamphlets from record and sheet-music publishing companies, dealers, clubs, and radio stations. Also included are books annotated by Alex Robertson in the course of his disco-graphical research. Alex Robertson's research materials on record labels and series, as well as on Montreal musical activity between 1913 and 1970 are included in the fonds. His extensive correspondence and related newsletters are included. The fonds includes photographs of Alex Robertson with his family; there is also a photograph of Alex Robertson with jazz author George Martin, and several of a reception held in his honor in the Concordia University Archives reading room in 1988.

Among the correspondence are original letters and manuscript notes dated 1913-1931 in which francophone Catholics report to the church hierarchy the names of suspected Freemasons.
