Committees

The series provides information on student life, university planning and development, publicity, personnel, and numerous other matters. It includes records of internal committees, subcommittees, advisory committees, search committees, task forces, the Board of Governors, and the Senate. The series contains correspondence, reports, membership lists, a code of conduct, a copy of the University charter, and records related to bylaws and amendments, appointments, resignations, and election to and attendance at committees.

The series includes a large number of files covering a wide range of activity. A detailed list of file titles is given in the box contents listing included as an appendix to this finding aid. The committee files are grouped as follows: General, Board of Governors, Financial Aid to Students, Planning and Priorities, Publicity and Identity, Search Committees, Senate, Space and Buildings, University Committee on Development, and University Council on Student Life.

Publicity and public relations

The series provides information on the organization of the Public Relations Department and the planning of publicity for S.G.W. and its departments. It contains documents concerning advertising and press conferences as well news releases. The series is divided into the following subseries:

Relations/services external

The series provides information on relations between the University and the Canadian government and the Quebec government, as well as parapublic and private organizations and agencies. The series relates to positions taken by the University, the development of higher education in Quebec, and intiatives towards other universities and colleges on possible collaboration. The series contains briefs, reports, correspondence, and notes. The series is divided into the following sub-series:

Staff, teaching

The series includes information on the administration of teaching personnel as well as the individual personnel files of teaching staff. The series includes records on appointments and retirements, salaries, job postings, faculty requirements, tenure, negotiations with the Sir George Williams Association of University Teachers and the Concordia University Faculty Association. The series is divided into the following sub-series:

Statistics

The series provides statistics on registration, enrolment, and degrees from 1927-1945 and 1974-1982. The series contains correspondence and reports.

Teaching activities

The series contains a paper evaluating Sir George Williams College based on a survey by two students (1942) and a group of papers written in 1957-1958 on various Canadian Y.M.C.A. activities by students in a Sociology class given by Henry F. Hall.

Policy

The sub-series consists of statements of University policies, the University Code and Procedures, and the Code of Conduct, as well as correspondence.

John S. Allen

John S. Allen, Secretary to the Sir George Williams Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Alumni's liaison with Sir George's student government.

Samuel H. Schecter

Samuel H. Schecter, a Montreal entrepreneur and benefactor of this university at the official opening of the Weissman Gallery in the Henry F. Hall Building. Schecter established a fund to collect contemporary art, which later resulted in the outstanding Sir George Williams University Collection of Canadian Art.
