Taras Grescoe fonds

Fonds consists of a record of the research Taras Grescoe conducted during the process of writing his books Sacré Blues, The Devil's Picnic, and The End of Elsewhere. They document Quebec Society, global tourism, and the prohibited food and substance business.

The records include sound recordings and transcripts of interviews, research materials, drafts of book chapters and articles, travel note books, and correspondence.

The purpose of the Oral History-Montreal Studies program is to document the history of the Montreal metropolitan area. Sponsored by Shell Canada, the program funds projects which make accessible the oral history of Greater Montreal, through systematic interviewing of leaders and witnesses of the labour, industrial, cultural, social, religious, and ethnic scene since World War II. The project is administered by the Concordia University Library.

The collection provides information on the history of Greater Montreal. It consists of recorded interviews of individuals as well as some transcripts and application forms for some of the projects. The projects are:

The Negro Community Centre/Charles H. Este Cultural Centre fonds contains records relating to the operation of the Negro Community Centre/Charles H. Este Cultural Centre. It contains textual records and other materials documenting the mission; structure; administration; building and facilities; and programs and services offered at the Centre, dating from its founding in the late 1920s until it ceased its operations. The fonds also contains materials dating to after the closure of the Centre.

The fonds documents the history of the Negro Community Centre/Charles H. Este Cultural Centre, its role in Little Burgundy and the greater Montreal area, and its relationships to other organizations, including but not limited to the Coloured Women's Club of Montreal; Union United Church; Red Feather Services; Federated Appeal of Greater Montreal; and Centraide. The fonds also includes documentation related to the Walker Credit Union and Afro-Can. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters is also mentioned in the documentation.

The Negro Community Centre/Charles H. Este Cultural Centre fonds includes a wide variety of textual records, including but not limited to administrative records; ledgers and other financial records; correspondence; board and committee meeting minutes and related records; reports; calendars, flyers, posters, descriptions and other documentation relating to programs, services, and events taking place at the Centre; photographic materials, including prints and negatives; architectural drawings and plans; clothing; and ephemera.

The fonds documents the arts and crafts in Montreal and elsewhere between the late 1940s and the 1980s. The fonds covers the evolution of Lucien Desmarais' career from its beginnings at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts until his death in 1988, including his activities in theatre and his travels. The fonds also reveals his diverse interests in theatre, entertainment, and general culture. The fonds is based on the professional activities of Lucien Desmarais, tisserand concepteur (weaver-designer) and gives information on his creations for high fashion and interior decoration and the annual exhibitions in which he participated. The fonds also gives information on his involvement in numerous associations and cultural organizations as founder, director, and jury member. The fonds gives information on his teaching activities and the courses he gave at various colleges, as well as his speeches.

The fonds includes correspondence, textile samples, course notes, theatre programs, posters, invitations to openings and exhibits, photographs, clippings, drawings, albums, and a scrapbook of clippings of fashion photographs with swatches of the fabrics used in the garments shown. It includes a major collection of documents on the history of textiles and the artists and craftspersons who made them.

The Peter K. Johnston fonds contains documentation pertaining to the American Jazz musician Harry James (1916-1983) and the Big band era. The fonds primarily documents the musical career of Harry James as bandleader and trumpeter. It also includes information on the Montreal Vintage Music Society (MVMS), and on other jazz musicians, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Metcalf, Oscar Peterson, and Glenn Miller, among many others.

The fonds contains memorabilia, correspondence, magazines, discographies, photographs, newspaper clippings, reference documentation, posters, moving images, and an audio recording, among other material. Some of the documents are arranged in scrapbooks.
