Space planning and Maintenance

The sub-series consists of records relating to space planning, allocation, and maintenance in the University. It documents the plan and negotiations to rent sporting facilities at the Olympic Stadium 1976-1981, plans for library buildings, a proposal for an athletics site at Covey Hill, the proposal for the University to acquire the HMCS Donnacona building (1957-1967), and room reservations. The sub-series contains correspondence, briefs, reports, and notes.

Privately recorded sound recordings

Included (according to the handwritten notes) are recordings of jazz radio programs, copies of recorded music, and recordings made of the Senior Musicians Orchestra in performance.

There appear, in addition, to be copies of recordings by performers such as the Glen Miller Band, Art Morrow, Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, and others. Some tapes include comedy routines by Redd Foxx and others.

Some of the privately recorded audio reels and audio cassettes are accompanied by notes and lists that were made by Herb Johnson. Many of these are inserted in the sound recording enclosure, but others are stored in a file folder and it may be possible to relate these to specific recordings. Most of the notes include the date of creation of the reproduction and playing times, and some include the date of the original recording session.

Sur Rodney (Sur)’s talks, presentations and writings

The subseries illustrates Sur Rodney (Sur)’s career as an artist and his involvement in the art scene, from the beginning of his career in the 1960s to today. It documents Sur Rodney (Sur)’s various actions and implications not only as an artist, but also as spokesperson for artists from marginalized groups and especially those living with HIV/AIDS.
The subseries includes material on various of Sur Rodney’s projects, such as, among others, the video production The Scary truth About Cockroaches & Landlords, various exhibitions, Sur Rodney (Sur)’s contributions to numerous publications, his participation in various panels and talks, especially his presentation at the CCA Panel : Art Minus Hype : American Art in the 1980’s (1997), and the television shows Sur Rodney (Sur) Show (1980) and All New Sur Rodney (Sur) Show (1981), both moderated by Sur Rodney (Sur). In these shows Sur Rodney (Sur) presented artists from the Manhattan's Lower East Side art scene.
The subseries also includes interviews with Sur Rodney (Sur).

With researcher and associate producer Oleh Rumak, McKenna investigated how top Slovak officials from the Nazi Collaborationist government ended up in Canada. The film, code-named Slovaks II has not been shown to the public.

In January 1981, McKenna volunteered to cover the Civil War in El Salvador. The resulting documentary A Cruel Place documented the state-sponsored terrorism in that country.

Death in Tripoli is the story McKenna uncovered in 1988 when travelling to Khaddafi's Libya, on the violent and mysterious death of Canadian Christopher Halens, a young Southam journalist.

In 1988, McKenna filmed a documentary on the Empress of Ireland, a Titanic -size steamship which sank in the St. Lawrence River, and is now being pillaged by scavenger hunters, including one who brought up a human skeleton.

The file provides information used for the documentary McKenna directed and co-wrote on the investigation of torture and torturers in Northern Ireland, Greece, Argentina and, Nicaragua. In 1982, when Argentina returned to democracy McKenna travelled back to Argentina to film The Hooded Men, also known as The Return, and took newspaper publisher Jacobo Timmerman back to the jail on the outskirts of Buenos Aires where he had been held and tortured.

In 1978 McKenna directed a film called In the Nick of Time, reporting on journalist politician Nick Auf der Maur's successful attempt to restructure the Los Angeles Olympics.

In 1983 McKenna investigated Nazi collaborators hiding in Canada. The film focuses on the story of New York off-Broadway producer Jack Garfein. Garfein is brought back to his home town in Slovakia for the first time and then to the Auschwitz and Birkenhau death camps to discover his past. In the film Garfein confronts the gauleiter who had killed his family.

In 1978, McKenna wrote and directed the first national television documentary challenging the conclusions of the official report into the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1963. Dallas and After was followed by three more documentaries on new evidence: In 1979, Crossfire, reported the conclusion of a Congressional Committee that Kennedy was probably killed as the result of a conspiracy. The Coffin was Empty (198?) is a documentary on testimony that medical evidence was tampered with during and after the autopsy of Kennedy. McKenna produced Who Shot JFK?, a program summarizing the evidence, on the 20th anniversary of the assassination.

In summer 1991, McKenna agreed to direct the television memoirs of Pierre Trudeau. He was contracted to develop and direct the research for the project, and he was then contracted to direct the five-part series for broadcast on both the French and English networks of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The producers were Les Productions la fête (owned by Rock Demers). The line producer was Kevin Tierney. Formal studio interviews followed Brian McKenna's overall development plan and were conducted in spring 1992 alternately by Jean-François Lépine in French and then by Terence McKenna in English (Day 1, English, Day 2, French for ten days). Sequences of encounters with a series of world leaders (including former presidents Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter, Cuban president Fidel Castro and former World Bank chief Robert McNamara) were directed by McKenna with periodic off-camera questions. Terence McKenna was contracted to write and deliver the narration in English. Jean-François Lépine delivered the French narration.

Directed and co-written with his brother Terence McKenna, The Valour and the Horror summarizes a three- year inquiry into three Second World War battles. The films were honoured with five Gemini Awards.

In 1981, McKenna directed and wrote for Toronto's Lauron Productions a feature-length documentary called The War Reporters on abuses suffered by journalists in Argentina, among them Jacobo Timmerman, as well as the danger and distress they face while covering war and revolution.

In 1995, with his brother Terence, McKenna completed another two documentary films on the Second World War. The producers were the same as The Valour and the Horror: Galafilm, the National Film Board and CBC. The films were The War at Sea (2 hours), a critical examination of Canadian naval leadership, and a one-hour documentary on the shared history of Poland and Canada in World War II, A Web of War. The second was an emotional tribute to the women of the Warsaw uprising, and the Polish division fighting under Canadian command which in one of the war's great epiphanies, freed 1,800 Warsaw women from a German POW camp. Some 300 marriages resulted from this liberation, and many emigrated to Canada. A Battle Lost gives the untold story of how Nazi U-Boats blockaded the St. Lawrence River during WWII, including an encounter between a U-Boat crewman and a stoker from a corvette.

World's Greatest Athletes. - 1976-1984. - 0.23 m of textual records. - 12 videocassettes. - 10 photographs.
In 1982-1983 McKenna developed an eight-part private series on sports champions for Filmsport International called Champions: the World's Greatest Athletes. The series explored the world and mythology of athletes such as hockey stars Wayne Gretzky and Russian Vladislav Tretiak, American football star Joe Montana, boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard, and baseball's Gary Carter, whom he took to Japan to encounter the world of Japanese baseball. McKenna produced, wrote and directed these four one-hour films personally, and he produced four others, recruiting four other documentary film-makers, including the Oscar winning John Zaritsky, to write and direct hours on tennis champion Bjorn Borg, horse racing legend Willie Shoemaker, Philadelphia basketball star Julius Erving, and the marathon runners Bill Rogers and Alberto Salazar.

Works of fellow artists

The subseries illustrates the art scene around Sur Rodney (Sur), focussing especially on artists from the New York East Village, but including some international artists as well. It gives an insight in the artistic career of various artists, as there are, among others, Andreas Senser, Gracie Mansion, Geoffrey Hendricks, and photographer Timothy Greathouse. The sub-series covers subjects like Black Contemporary Art, performance art, Queer Art, and the problematic of Aids. The sub-series includes the documentary "I'll be your Mirror", screened at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian film festival and featuring photographer Nan Goldin and the lower east side of Manhattan during the 1980s and HIV/AIDS. It also includes an Acker Award box from 2014, containing original art works and mementos contributed by the awardees.

The subseries consists of, but is not limited to, newspaper articles, exhibition catalogs, magazines, and other publications, correspondence, a poster, and an Acker Awards box.

In 1987, McKenna wrote and produced the feature-length docudrama for the CBC on the Montréal underworldAnd Then You Die . It was inspired by the true story of Irish gangsters in the West end of Montréal using Hell's Angels as mercenaries to build a cocaine empire. It was broadcast internationally and won a pair of Gemini awards.

In April 1988, McKenna travelled to Europe to research a possible film on Canada in the First World War. The proposal was sold to CBC Current Affairs and resulted in The Killing Ground, a two-hour film on the 59,000 Canadians who died in the First World War. For this production, McKenna teamed up with his youngest brother Terence, a host on CBC's daily magazine show The Journal. The film won the Anik award for best CBC documentary in 1988.
