Ken Whittingham fonds

The fonds provides information on Ken Whittingham’s student life at Loyola College, his work as a journalist and his professional career in the field of public relations at Concordia University.

The EDUCATION subseries is comprised of student records including a Loyola College commemorative degree Whittingham received in 2005, some student papers produced during his studies, a file on the controversy about the Loyola of Montreal Students' Association (LMSA) Gamut Magazine and records related to his involvement with the Loyola News.

The JOURNALISM subseries includes records related to Whittingham's employment at the Montreal Star. It contains press clippings of articles he wrote between June 1970 and May 1979, including an activity summary in the form of an index produced by his father John Hurst Whittingham, a notebook and a file about the closing of the newspaper in 1979. The subseries also includes a sample of articles Whittingham wrote for various publications, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, the University of Waterloo Gazette, among others.

The PUBLIC RELATIONS subseries includes a file testifying of Whittingham's work as a Public Relations Officer at McGill University between 1980 and 1982 but mostly records related to his position as Interim Director and then Director of the Public relations Department of Concordia University. They include correspondence, press clippings, event brochures and transcriptions of radio interviews, materials related to the tragic events of August 24, 1992, the Concordia institutional marketing campaign of 1995 and Whittingham's work as an external consultant.

The CONFERENCE, SEMINARS, TALKS subseries is comprised of records related to presentations or workshops given by Whittingham to the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE), the Conférence des recteurs et principaux des universités du Québec (CREPUQ) and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in between 1993 and 1994.

The DISTINCTIONS series includes a file on the Distinguished Service Award Whittingham received from the Concordia University Alumni Association (CUAA) in 1997.

The fonds documents Daniel Feist’s work as a freelance broadcaster, journalist, musician and teacher, including his travels and participation in events such as Montreal’s Nuits d’Afrique festival, the United Nations Conference on Racism, music awards, and others. The material mainly covers the genre of world-beat music (also known as world music) in the period from 1990 to 2005. Some sound recordings of music performances include interviews with the artists.

Alan Hustak fonds

The fonds is related to Alan Hustak’s work as a journalist and author.
It consists mostly of research material on the Quebec physician and Montreal mayor of Irish origin Sir William Hales Hingston, (1829-1907). The material was collected by Alan Hustak in preparation of his book Sir William Hingston : Montreal Mayor, Surgeon and Banker, published in 2004.
The research material and articles on pilot Albert Mah (1920-2005) and Canadian broadcaster Jimmy Tapp (1918-2004) give an insight in Hustak’s work as a journalist. The fonds also includes photographs of singer Norma Hutton.

The fonds includes without limitations correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, brochures, manuscripts, book chapters and personal documents. Most documents are reproductions, made in the 1990s or later.

The fonds consists of some administrative records of the SGWU Department of English and the Concordia Department of English between 1971 and 2005. It also consists of some SGWU Department of English records related to student academic activities in the 1940s and to public readings and lectures, and a few interviews, produced between 1966 and 1972.

The fonds mainly includes minutes of departmental meetings and some course timetables. It also includes some student papers in bound volumes and 63 sound recordings (80 audio reels) mainly composed of poetry readings (see the Concordia SpokenWeb project which uses this material) but also a few lectures given at SGWU. There are also loose typed sheets describing some of the SGWU poetry readings.

There's a sub-series titled COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT related to his involvement with the Canadian Association of Emeriti and Retired Academics (CAERA), the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) and the Association for the Study of Canadian Radio and Television (ASCRT). The POETRY READING SERIES and the FACE TO FACE CONFERENCE sub-series include correspondence, programmes, publicity and other records related to the logistics of those events. The RESEARCH sub-series contains record about a France-Quebec collaboration on the study radio-drama tradition. The fonds also contains records about the Centre for Broadcasting Studies Fink helped establishing and the CBC Radio Drama Bibliography.

The fonds highlights the personal and professional lives of Vincent and Olga Diniacopoulos as antiquarians, collectors, art dealers and travelers. It is comprised of personal letters from, and copies of letters to, family members, friends, and business associates. There are identification documents, passports, and other travel documents, school records and other materials from Olga and Denis’ childhoods’. The fonds includes personal/family photographs, negatives and slides ranging from the 19th century to the 1990s. There are photographs of antiques and works of art; however, many of the subjects are not identified. There are also many publications (books, newspapers) that were collected by the fonds creators throughout the years. Among these written documents is a travel diary and as well as some letters from the 19th century which cannot be clearly linked to the creators of the fonds, but are nevertheless an interesting source of information.
