Hingston Family fonds

The fonds consists mainly of correspondence received by Sir William Hales Hingston and a few letters received by Mrs. Hingston and their sons William, Donald, and Harold.

There are also photographs, press clippings, brochures, invitations, manuscripts of Sir William's writings, business cards, maps and objects. The fonds includes a scrapbook of press clippings relating to Sir William Hingston's political and professional life, an official document appointing him to the Ottawa Improvement Commission in 1902, the original letters patent related to Sir William's knighthood, and a circa 1889 photograph of Sir William. Also included is an album containing 92 wedding and travel photographs of the Hingston family.

The fonds consists of a scrapbook of press clippings documenting student sports activities at Loyola College; the clippings were gathered by John O'Neill Gallery while he was a student. Also included are early 20th-century legal documents, primarily related to real estate transactions conducted by the O'Neill / Gallery families; nine late 19th- / early 20th-century books on Montreal and Canadian history; a 1904 book entitled Irish Literature, and a photograph of the 1919 McGill University rugby team .

It consists mostly of research material on the Quebec physician and Montreal mayor of Irish origin Sir William Hales Hingston, (1829-1907). The material was collected by Alan Hustak in preparation of his book Sir William Hingston : Montreal Mayor, Surgeon and Banker, published in 2004.
The research material and articles on pilot Albert Mah (1920-2005) and Canadian broadcaster Jimmy Tapp (1918-2004) give an insight in Hustak’s work as a journalist. The fonds also includes photographs of singer Norma Hutton.
