The fonds consists of materials assembled by Herb Johnson. It reflects his career as a musical performer, combo and dance band/orchestra leader, and musicians' union member and executive, as well as his personal interests and personal life.

The fonds documents the dance band and jazz music scene from the 1930s through the 1980s, primarily in Montreal. It is a valuable source of documentation on the bebop style of jazz that emerged in the 1940s, and of documentation related to the Senior Musicians' Association and Orchestra.

The fonds consists of manuscript and print music, including arrangements by Herb Johnson; personal correspondence; saxophone and clarinet technique books and articles; books and articles on arranging, harmonizing, and other facets of music; photographs; notebooks; personal financial records; programs, clippings, and other memorabilia; and magazines. The fonds includes sound recordings as well as objects including music portfolios, pocket handkerchiefs, and a record carrying case. Between 1940 and 1986, Alex Robertson collected records. Most of the recordings in the fonds are 78 rpm's pressed in Montreal by Berliner and Compo: Berliner was the first Canadian company to produce records, and Compo was the first to record Canadian Black musicians. The fonds contains a large number of sound recordings that have never had commercial or widespread distribution. The fonds includes about 3,000 pieces of sheet music of various genres, dating from ca 1885 to 1970; about 1,000 pieces have Canadian content. The fonds includes numerous catalogues and promotional pamphlets from record and sheet-music publishing companies, dealers, clubs, and radio stations. Also included are books annotated by Alex Robertson in the course of his disco-graphical research. Alex Robertson's research materials on record labels and series, as well as on Montreal musical activity between 1913 and 1970 are included in the fonds. His extensive correspondence and related newsletters are included. The fonds includes photographs of Alex Robertson with his family; there is also a photograph of Alex Robertson with jazz author George Martin, and several of a reception held in his honor in the Concordia University Archives reading room in 1988.

The documents relate to the artistic career of Kina Reusch and her participation in Corridart dans la rue Sherbrooke and the subsequent legal proceedings known as L'Affaire Corridart.

Included are photographs (slides,prints and negatives), textual documents including articles, clippings, and personal records, and a video of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation program "Kina Reusch: the New Penelope". The fonds includes a 151-page brief (Mémoire des appellants) for the Corridart hearings at the Appeal Court and a copy of the July-August 1976 issue of ArtsCanada which has a feature on Corridart.

The collection documents the events which occurred in 1987 and 1988 in the Overdale neighbourhood. It witnesses to the efforts made not only by the local residents but also architects, planners, and others to influence the City of Montreal to avoid demolishing historic buildings and established neighborhoods, and to preserve the city’s built heritage.

The collection includes photographs, moving images, sound recordings, press releases, clippings, meeting notices, correspondence, reports, newsletters and statements on the Overdale resistance prepared by former residents.

The Mary-Jacques Cambay Collection is the result of Mary-Jacques Cambay‘s research into stained-glass in Quebec, and the contributions of artists working in stained-glass to the Province's artistic heritage. The collection documents stained-glass windows existing in Quebec churches during the 1970s and 1980s. It also includes information pertaining to select churches. In addition, the collection documents the works of a number of stained glass artists, including Guido Nincheri, Charles William Kelsey, and Flavien St. Pierre, and the stained-glass studio "Canadian Pittsburgh Industries Limited" (C.P.I.). Importantly, it contains oral history interviews conducted by Cambay with artists working in stained glass.

The Mary-Jacques Cambay collection is composed mostly of photographic materials in form of prints and slides, but also audio cassettes and textual records. As textual materials, the collection consists in pamphlets, newspaper clippings, correspondence, extracts from reference works, and handwritten notes. An index of Quebec churches with stained glass windows completes the collection.

The fonds documents the arts and crafts in Montreal and elsewhere between the late 1940s and the 1980s. The fonds covers the evolution of Lucien Desmarais' career from its beginnings at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts until his death in 1988, including his activities in theatre and his travels. The fonds also reveals his diverse interests in theatre, entertainment, and general culture. The fonds is based on the professional activities of Lucien Desmarais, tisserand concepteur (weaver-designer) and gives information on his creations for high fashion and interior decoration and the annual exhibitions in which he participated. The fonds also gives information on his involvement in numerous associations and cultural organizations as founder, director, and jury member. The fonds gives information on his teaching activities and the courses he gave at various colleges, as well as his speeches.

The fonds includes correspondence, textile samples, course notes, theatre programs, posters, invitations to openings and exhibits, photographs, clippings, drawings, albums, and a scrapbook of clippings of fashion photographs with swatches of the fabrics used in the garments shown. It includes a major collection of documents on the history of textiles and the artists and craftspersons who made them.

The African Government Documents Collection is comprised of government documents dating from 1888 until 1988. The documents are predominantly from the period between 1950 and 1975. The documents primarily concern the following areas: Republic of Botswana, East Africa, Republic of The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nyasaland, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The Jack Litchfield Fonds consists of typewritten manuscripts for A Chronology of Five Montreal Record-Collectors' Clubs and A Chronology of Six Montreal Record-Collectors' Clubs (1989).

The collection is composed of images taken by François Lachapelle for the book "Répertoire des gravures conservées au Monastère des ursulines de Québec" (1982), created in collaboration with Mario Béland. The collection includes 465 slides, both black and white and colour, showing engravings, paintings, and embroidery from the collection of the Monastère des Ursulines de Québec. It also contains a handwritten inventory, which provides details about the items in the collection of the Ursulines de Québec.

The fonds consists of ten series, many of them subdivided into sub-series. The documents cover the period 1972 to 1982, however, the great majority of the documents were created between 1973 and 1976.

This finding aid deals with the administrative, financial files of this organization as well as the artist and exhibition files, the publicity material (posters, art catalogues), and photographs.

There is little documentation for the activities of the Véhicule Art Inc. gallery from 1976 to 1982. During this time the gallery experienced both administrative and financial difficulties. Frequent changes of staff and insufficient funding contributed to the weakening of the gallery and its activities.

The original order of the documents quite faithfully reflected the internal organization of the gallery. Thus, the documents dating from 1972 to 1975, were relatively well organized and required no further arrangement; on the other hand, those covering the 1976-1982 period needed complete reorganization.

Fonds is composed of records relating to Russell Thornton, friend of Irving Layton. Material consists of thirty-one letters between Russell Thornton and Irving Layton, in which Layton offers advice and encouragement to the young poet. The letters also chronicle Layton’s personal and professional life. The fonds also contains signed typescript copies of Layton’s poems. The fonds provides information on French-language theatre and visual arts in Montreal and elsewhere from the late 1950s through the 1980s.

The fonds contains the manuscript of an unpublished history of French theatre in Quebec, manuscripts of articles and talks, theatre programs, theatre photographs, clippings, and other documents. For instance, there are files on Montreal theatre productions (e.g., Théâtre du Rideau Vert and Théâtre de Quat'sous), authors (e.g., Gratien Gélinas and Michel Tremblay), and actors (e.g., Denise Pelletier).

The collection contains newspaper clippings relating to Irving Layton. These clippings review his work, comment on events held to honour Layton and his work, include interviews with the poet, document reviews by fans, and include articles about Irving Layton and Canadian poets in general. Clippings were taken from several large Canadian newspapers from Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Regina, Saskatoon, and Vancouver and include newspapers and magazines such as the Gazette, the Toronto Star, the Georgian, Poetry Canadian Review, Saturday Night, The Canadian Forum, Sunday Star and the Telegram.

The fonds consists of five scrapbooks including press clippings and articles, as well as photographs, a video cassette of a media interviews with Dorothy Davis [ca. 1983, 1984] and of a report on her death in 1993, and the honourary degrees conferred by Concordia University on Dorothy Davis and Violet Walters in 1984.

The fonds documents an oral history project of the Irish of Montreal made by Patricia Burns on behalf of the St. Patrick's Society of Montreal between 1990 and 1992. The materials were used by Patricia Burns for her book The Shamrock and the Shield : an oral history of the Irish in Montreal.

The fonds is mainly composed of sound recordings and transcriptions of 54 interviews conducted by Patricia Burns and some by Kevin O'Donnell, with people of Irish origin living in Montreal, and many having grown up in Griffintown.

Fonds consists of research material and oral history interviews conducted by Merrily Weisbord for the writing of The Strangest Dream. The interviews cover various aspects of the evolution of the Communist Party of Canada (renamed the Labour Progressive Party in 1943) and the life of some of its Quebec members.

Fonds includes more than 20 hours of sound recordings consisting of interviews with about fifteen individuals who were members of the party between the 1930s and the 1950s, such as Lea Roback, Irene Kon, Gilles Hénault and Fred Taylor. All the players, from the upper middle class intellectual Stanley Ryerson to the working class lumber camp labour organizer, Gérard Fortin, are included. There is also a 15 minute recorded message by Paul Robeson urging Montreal voters to reelect Fred Rose in 1945. Fonds also includes interview notes and transcriptions, correspondence, and printed materials.

The fonds consists primarily of slides on liturgical art in Quebec. It includes slides on the production of films and books on art.

The African Newspaper Collection consists of Taifa Leo (1979-1988; 1992-1996), the Daily Nation and Sunday Nation (1979-1985), and The Standard (1982-1995). The newspapers that compose this collection were published in Kenya between 1979 and 1996.
