Velma Weeks Barker collection

The Velma Weeks Barker collection contains materials related to the life and contributions of Velma Weeks Barker.

This collection contains photographs and textual records. The personal photographs that comprise the collection show Weeks Barker and her family and include photographs taken in Little Burgundy and inside community spaces, including Union United Church. Many of the images were also taken in family spaces. The textual records include newspaper clippings referring to activities occurring at the Negro Community Centre and the Negro Theater Guild. This collection also contains materials related to her husband, Darnley Cecil Barker, including information about his participation in the Canadian Army and his immigration from Barbados to Canada to serve.

The Velma Weeks Barker collection includes the following items:

The fonds provides information on Philip Szporer's career as a part-time instructor at Concordia University but also as a filmmaker and a journalist. The PROFESSIONAL LIFE series includes material related to Stress, the Official Journal of the International Institute of Stress and its Affiliates Szporer edited in the beginning of the 1980's, some of films he directed as well as conferences and festivals he attended or actively took part in. The DISTINCTIONS sub-series is comprised of records related to the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize and the Distinguished Teaching Award he received in 2010 and 2016, respectively. The TEACHING sub-series contains course outlines, records related to the CUPFA grants Szporer received throughout the years, some correspondence, a working copy of the Concordia University Contemporary Dance Department Assessment Report he produced in 2001 as well as some course materials, including slides on the history of modern dance as well as the works of dancers: Doris Humphrey, Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Maud Allen, Martha Graham, Ruth St. Denis, and Twyla Tharp among others. The WRITINGS sub-series includes articles Szporer wrote for Dance Connection, Dance Journal USA, Cinema Canada as well as Concordia's Thursday Report.

The PERSONAL LIFE series contains a case study on the distribution of 'Not a Love Story' submitted to the department of Communication Studies in 1981 while Szporer was completing his graduate studies at Concordia University.

Mary Morter fonds

The Mary Morter fond contains documents pertaining to theater in Montreal. More specifically, the fonds is composed of materials concerning the Instant Theatre and the Pendulum Theatre, both located in Montreal and founded and run by Mary Morter in the 1960s and 1970s. The fonds provides an overview of the programming at both theatres. It also provides insight into how the theaters were perceived by the public. In addition, the fonds contains a number of documents focusing on the play North American Indian Legends by Pendulum Theatre. Documents created by other theatres located in Montreal or Toronto provide additional insight into the English-speaking theatre scene in those cities in the 20th century.

The Mary Morter fonds contains theatre programs, photographs, posters, correspondence, magazines, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, a sound recording, and various plays, among other documents.

Mark Abley fonds

The fonds documents Mark Abley’s career as a writer from 1972 to 2015 and his contribution to the Canadian literary culture. It reflects his work as journalist, especially for La Gazette, and his freelance writing in the fields of journalism, poetry, children’s books, editing, and non-fiction books. Furthermore, the fonds illustrates Abley’s various ways to give on his passion, be it through lectures, workshops, conferences, school visits or even religious services.
Finally, the fonds gives an insight into English literature from Quebec, especially poetry, dating from the 1970s to 2014, mainly through a collection of chapbooks and monographies, which are all signed by the authors. This collection is completed by several literary magazines and issues of Ogmios, the Journal of the Foundation for Endangered Languages.
The subjects of endangered languages and English as part of Quebec’s language culture have been repeatedly treated by Abley and can be found throughout the fonds.
The fonds also includes interviews that Abley conducted within the scope of his research with several English-speaking writers, such as Jane Goodall, Henry Kissinger, and others.
The fonds contains published as much as unpublished materials.

The TEACHING subseries includes records related to Christopher Jackson's employment at Concordia University such as his Full Professor application as well as a University Chorus course manual. The ADMINISTRATION subseries is comprised of files related to the Grey Nuns project, in which Jackson was involved. It includes copies of the Catalogue partiel d'oeuvres d'art de la Maison-Mère des Soeurs Grises de Montréal from 1973, as well as some reports and studies related to the development of the building acquired by Concordia in 2007.

The CONSULTING SERVICES subseries is comprised of correspondence related to Jackson's work as a technical consultant to appraise organs with the Comité spécial pour le projet d'orgues du Grand Séminaire de Montréal, the Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, the Comité de l'orgue Saint-Pierre-Apôtre, the Fabrique Saint-Léon de Westmount or the Fabrique Notre-Dame between 1983 and 1994.

The COMITÉ DES ORGUES DE LA FONDATION DU PATRIMOINE RELIGIEUX DU QUÉBEC subseries testifies of Jackson's involvement with the committee from1988 to 2009, with records such as agendas, meeting minutes and some correspondence. The subseries also includes technical reports on church organs in St-Paul-d'Abbotsford, Sherbooke, Dunham, St-Paul de Grand-Mère, St-Narcisse or Saint-Lambert, among others.

The RESEARCH ANDREFERENCE DOCUMENTATION subseries includes files with miscellaneous documentation on different subjects close to Jackson's expertise such as Music of New France, Auguste Fay (organ builder), and historical organs.

The fonds also includes promotional material related to the Orfeo of Claudio Monteverdi concert as well as the Liliane M. Stewart funeral that Jackson was a musical director of and some correspondence with the Organ Historical society (1989-1999) and the Studio de musique ancienne (1989-1999).

The fonds includes a sound recording and a transcript of an interview with John Bland, professor emeritus of the McGill University School of Architecture. It was done in 1991 as an oral history project by graduate students in a course entitled “Modern Architecture in Canada”, given by Howard Shubert at Concordia University in 1991. An edited selection from the interview was published as “An Interview with Professor John Bland” in John Bland at Eighty: A Tribute, ed by I. Murray and N. Schoenauer (Montreal: McGill University, 1991), p. 4-17.

Patricia Burns fonds

The fonds documents an oral history project of the Irish of Montreal made by Patricia Burns on behalf of the St. Patrick's Society of Montreal between 1990 and 1992. The materials were used by Patricia Burns for her book The Shamrock and the Shield : an oral history of the Irish in Montreal.

The fonds is mainly composed of sound recordings and transcriptions of 54 interviews conducted by Patricia Burns and some by Kevin O'Donnell, with people of Irish origin living in Montreal, and many having grown up in Griffintown.

The fonds consists of some administrative records of the SGWU Department of English and the Concordia Department of English between 1971 and 2005. It also consists of some SGWU Department of English records related to student academic activities in the 1940s and to public readings and lectures, and a few interviews, produced between 1966 and 1972.

The fonds mainly includes minutes of departmental meetings and some course timetables. It also includes some student papers in bound volumes and 63 sound recordings (80 audio reels) mainly composed of poetry readings (see the Concordia SpokenWeb project which uses this material) but also a few lectures given at SGWU. There are also loose typed sheets describing some of the SGWU poetry readings.
