Name of creator
Haralds Grants was born in Latvia in 1925. He immigrated to Canada in 1951 together with his wife. They landed in Montreal, where Haralds Grants started working at Ben’s Delicatessen on Maisonneuve Boulevard in Downtown Montreal soon after their arrival. He stayed at Bens until 1972, mostly working night shift. During his employment at Bens, Haralds Grants collected autographs from famous guests at the restaurant for his daughter Anita Grants. She preserved them in three autograph books. Harald Grants died in 1974.
The fonds was transferred from Concordia University's Records Management and Archives Department to Concordia University Libraries' Special Collections March 16, 2016.
Scope and content
The fonds is related to Montreal nightlife in the 1950s and 60s. It gives an impression of the nightlife in a Montreal Downtown restaurant with its waiters and guests, remembered in photographs and autographs, the latter covering Canadian and international celebrities from sports and entertainment business.
The fonds includes autograph albums, photographs, brochures and postcards.
Immediate source of acquisition
The documents were donated to the Concordia University Archives by Anita Grants in April 2004.
