Biographical history

Garry Neill Kennedy is a conceptual artist and teacher. He was born in St. Catherines, Ontario, on November 6, 1935, and died in Vancouver, British Columbia, on August 8, 2021. Kennedy exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. His work appeared at the National Gallery of Canada, Articule, A Space, Owens Art Gallery, Cold City Gallery, Open Space, and Art Metropole, among many other galleries and museums. He served as president of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) from 1967 until 1990, where he also taught for many years. In 2011, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia with his spouse, Dr. Cathy Busby, to teach at University of British Columbia. Kennedy was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003. He received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2004.

Custodial history

Materials were donated to Concordia University Library's Special Collections and Archives by Dr. Cathy Busby, spouse of the late Garry Neill Kennedy, on November 21, 2024. The materials arrived at the Vanier Library on March 6, 2025.

Scope and content

The Garry Neill Kennedy collection contains printed matter by and about conceptual artist Garry Neill Kennedy showcasing his works as presented across Canada and internationally from 1972 until 2018.

The Garry Neill Kennedy collection includes invitations, postcards, promotional materials, and pamphlets from exhibitions of his work, as well as three artists’ books (book works). While the materials in this collection are identified as textual records, many have graphic elements and represent and/or show examples of Kennedy’s work.
