Notice biographique

Franklyn Harvey, born in St. Andrews, Grenada, on February 14, 1943, was a Grenadian activist, political philosopher, academic, author, and engineer. He attended the University of London, where he received a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1964. Later, Harvey moved to Montreal, where he attended McGill University. There he received a Master’s in Environmental Science in 1968. While living in Montreal and studying at McGill, Harvey was part of the CLR James Study Circle and the Caribbean Conference Committee. He attended the influential Congress of Black Writers in Montreal in 1968.

Harvey moved to Trinidad after graduating from McGill, where he was a founding member of the New Beginning Movement and was part of the part of the Grenadian leadership of the Movement for Assemblies of the People, later the New Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation, or New JEWEL Movement, a Marxist-Leninist vanguard party in Grenada. Significantly, Harvey was the primary author of The Manifesto of the New Jewel Movement, used by the movement when it took over the Government of Grenada in 1979.

Harvey returned to Canada in 1974, settling in Toronto. He became the Editor of Caribbean Dialogue and Caribbean Connection. He was a member of the Latin American Working Group, a research and solidarity organization established in Toronto, and the Principal in Paticiplan, a network of independent consultants and change practitioners in Canada and the Caribbean that worked with NGOs worldwide.

Harvey died in Ottawa on May 16, 2016.
