History
A Department for Interdisciplinary Studies was approved by the Senate of Loyola College in 1967.
Approval for the establishment of a Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies happened at the University Council meeting of March 2, 1973, 'a convenient administrative regrouping of existing Arts Faculty components'. Peter Jones of the Department of Theology was its first Director.
Associate Professor David E. Charlton is named Chairman. Programs in Science and Human Affairs, Asian Studies, Canadian Studies, Urban Studies, Russian Studies and Women's Studies are all pulled together in the Centre.
In their Interim Report to Senate on the Future of Interdisciplinary Studies of January 1977, David E. Charlton and Maïr Verthuy are urging for the establishment of a School/College of Interdisciplinary Studies for an increased autonomy and authority in its relationship with department and faculties towards interdisciplinary programmes. However, the Report of the Academic Deans to the Senate Concerning the Academic Organization of the University, the status of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies suggests that the status of the Centre is maintained with a director having the status of a department chairman.
The Board of Governors approves 'the establishment of a Division IV of the Faculty of Arts and Science to consist of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and further units approved by the board'.
Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies moves to Mackay street.
During the Senate meeting of October 12, 1979, the status of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies is questioned. A lack of direction was expressed: students enrolled in courses at the Centre did not even sure of the fact that the Centre was still in existence.
Measures to restructure the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies are approved at the meeting of the Council of the faculty of Arts and Science of February 1, 1980. In March, the Council would vote to disband the Centre: the Faculty of Arts and Science would retain its interdisciplinary programs, handing their management to program coordinators reporting directly to the Provost (except for the Recreation and Leisure Studies program that would be housed in Division III of the Faculty and report to its Dean).
